At the University of Toronto’s convocation ceremony on June 6, 2025, Ilya Sutskever, Co-founder and former Chief Scientist of OpenAI, delivered a thought-provoking address on the future of artificial intelligence — and what it means for the next generation.
🔮 The Coming Wave of Superintelligence
Sutskever described AI as both “unprecedented” and “extreme,” predicting that digital systems will eventually outperform humans in every task. Drawing parallels between the brain and machines, he said:
“The brain is a biological computer. A digital brain can do the same things.”
According to him, within 3 to 10 years, we may see AI evolve to such an advanced level that it reshapes science, economics, and human productivity altogether.
🤖 What Happens to Humans?
With machines poised to take over even the most complex jobs, Sutskever posed a critical question:
“What role will humans play when AI can do everything?”
He stressed that AI will dramatically impact everyone’s lives, regardless of whether they’re prepared for it or not.
“Whether you like it or not, your life is going to be affected by AI to a great extent.”
🎓 His Advice to Graduates: Face Reality, Take Action
Sutskever concluded with practical life wisdom for the graduating class:
Don’t get stuck in the past. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, shift your attention to what you can actually do next.
✅ Accept reality.
✅ Focus on solutions.
✅ Stay adaptable in a rapidly evolving world.
